The Huaca del Sol (Sun), Huaca de La Luna (Moon) and Arco Iris (Rainbow) in Trujillo Peru were Mochica and Chimu palace, temple tomb pyramids.
The Huaca del Sol or Sun Temple is about 380 m long and has a present height 41 m, originally was 50 meters high, the biggest structure built in adobe in the world; probably the envy of many Egyptian pharaohs of the “Middle Empire” since at Dashur they tried to build a pyramid solely of adobe (the Black Pyramid) evoking the Osirian rituals related to mud and resurrection but crumbled; they had to conform building their pyramids with adobe using a stone structure to sustain.
Huaca de la Luna is located right in front of The Sun temple, it was another marvelous edification built as pyramid but actually is made of trapezoidal terraces at the side of a mountain, the interior walls are decorated in Bas relive with symbolic designs, at the center of this designs, is a painted mud molded face that might represent Ai Apaec a mythological Mochica Chief.
It is surprising that these decorations had survived “El Nino” inundations, periodical flooding rains that destroy most of the farming land and domesticated animal.
Around the 6th and 7th century there were 30 year of constant “El Nino” appearances, fallowed by 30 more years of “La Nina” years of extreme dryness, times of extreme famine that wiped out t the Mochica civilization (100 AD to 600 AD and the Mochica capital that probably was in this area also vanished.
It took more than a century later for this place to come to life again at times when the Chimu kingdom flourished and built its capital Chan Chan, close this area and the new comers continued using the Mochica area as a burial place.
The Huaca del Dagon also known Arco Iris, In English, Rainbow Temple for the reason at the side there are in relief representations of seven symbolic water arcs, this a trapezoidal building like the Egyptian mastabas but with two floors, original had also a temple on top made of more rudimentary materials.
Because some Lamballeque ceramics are found in the area some believe that the Lamballeque civilization conquered this area and built this temple shortly before the Chimu 1100 – 1400 AC others a firm it is Chimu only.
The main characteristic of this area and period of time is the stuccowork that without undervalue its outstanding sculptural importance and precious symbolism in relation to their believes but as well ponders the knowledge that they had so that to make this mud figures stand rain or sandy winds periods and last for long period of time.
Also is important to know that at certain hours of the day this figures come out with a great relief force as well used at the advantage of the solar angle during different seasons like a solar devise to calculate dates.
