Cotosh or Kotosh in Huanuco Peru is a 4 000 years old stone temple and ceremony complex built in the eastern side of the Andes Mountains.

This temple complex is located at the base of a mountain close to a river; the main material used in its construction is stone, now has a modern triangular roof made of local straws that perhaps it was similar to the one used at the time of the temple activities.

The area is not too big to be qualified as a city, but has sufficient size to house a small community of temple attendants to carry out all the necessary deeds for the ceremonies. To ascend to the temple building that is on the top of a small hill, is necessary to use a stones stair made for this purpose probably with much of ceremonial significance.

The steps are through a small corridor they take you to the opposite side of the building, the only entrance to the main religious temple.

The temple entrance is through a small trapezoidal door, the overall shape of the building is square and the stone finishing is a little bet rustic.

The interior of this temple is just a room with a sunken square floor at the middle and a wide side walks around at the entrance level height.

Inside of the temple at each side of the room and in front of the door, there are three niches or false doors of the same size than the entrance door, together fallow the directions of the four cardinal points.

At each side of the trapezoidal niches are two rectangular niches, that each have below a square symbol made by two crossed arms, the ones right side or east are much thinner than the arms of the west side. Some people opinion makes them represent a feminine and masculine concept others youth and old age.

Appreciating this ceremonial place from the top of a mountain can be seen that is positioned in a creek made by two mountain chains; fallowing the river 2 kilometers is the modern city of Huanuco.

From the mountain on top can be seen a small artificial mound made of mud materials known as Huaca, it is a small pyramid part of the complex, they were used for burials as well for certain ritualistic ceremonies.

It is possible that all this was part of a commercial trading post between the Coastal and the Amazonian regions.
