Chavin was the most influential, developed early civilization but is in doubt if Chavin ever had an army capable to take over all the territories that reached, rather that that because there is no proof of such enterprise, some specialist think that Chavin was just a religious or philosophical concept with advanced knowledge in many fields, that permitted them exert their power mainly from “Chavin de Huantar” temple and certain temples built in strategic points where they exchanged their knowledge for tributes.

This temple started to be built about 900BC, first was made a U shaped building at the extreme left or north side of the building now partly covered, in the interior of the building was placed the “Lanzon” a statue like of a strange divinity of a man with feline face and snakes coming out from different places in the head.

Once a year, at the moment of the solstice the light enters through a hole, goes through the building and illuminates the Idol similar a similar peculiarity to what happens in the temple of Abu Simbel Egypt.

About 500 BC were added the left side of the building built over the right wing of the previous temple whose left wing was covered.

This new building had a trapezoidal shape like Egyptian mastabas but of much bigger dimensions; two columns were added at the entrance, in each one appears the feline deity with wings and other bird characteristics added. A great plaza complex was also assembled at the east side of the temple.

The interior of this massive temple are some galleries like a labyrinth with small rooms at the sides that resemble niches or false doors in this room also are small niches in the walls, do to the small size probably where used for ritual purposes rather than for storage for the reason.

In a cornice at west side of the building are carving representing mythical lions with bird, snake and human characteristics that point towards a probable relation with the painted lions at the north side of the ancient temple of Sechin that have Lion and bird attributes.
